I am 20 years old, and am pretty darn smart when it comes to business; I have owned 2 businesses and have a very professional looking resume. Do you know of any tips or tricks to get hired as upper management or as an executive? I am not into the "working my way to the top" style. I need a legal, not necessarily ethical approach to get nice high employment.
Your help is greatly appreciated, please give me your best answer and I will give you the 10 points you deserve.
The two busineses are a retail business, where I learned that my inventory came from shady sources, not illegal, just more risky. I still operate this business, sales are just not as high as I originally anticiapted.
My second business is a catering business, for this I do no marketing other then word of mouth, and sales are small and seasonal.
My resume is 100% legit, not lies. I am just looking for a higher and more stable income

Ok, even though your idea may not be on the highest moral plane, your question seems genuine.
Here's what you do:
1. Pick 10 target companies. The way to pick them is to call the business editors of all the area newspapers, and tell them you are doing some research on some of the most colorful business leaders in the area.
2. Narrow down the prospects that you receive. You need to find a kindred spirit. Look for similarities to yourself. In your case, look for fast growing companies, since they have rapid promotion possibilities. Look for privately held companies, since they tend to operate more entrepreneurially. Make sure that the person who built the company still runs it and has the power.
3. Research the target individuals. Again, you're looking for similarities. The ideal guy is someone who built the company himself by taking some gambles, doesn't have advanced degrees (believes in work and street smarts, not training), and ideally is a natural salesman. Salesmen love to be sold, and you are setting up to do the sales job of your life.
4. Arrange to meet your targets in a setting other than work, so that ultimately, it will be his idea to hire you. If they're a car nut, find a way to borrow a car that he will notice. Same thing with boats, music, golf, etc. If you connect in a place they love, it's instant bonding.
5. Bait the hook. You need to get the guy to notice you, and be intrigued. Doing donuts in the parking lot in a Ferrari might make the guy notice, but if he really appreciates cars, parking a couple of spaces away with the hood up on a Ferrari, will draw him in.
6. Once the hook is set, then it's up to you to come through with the goods. Not every rich self-made man is gonna hire any nutcase off the street, but if you get noticed, and it's his idea, then you have a shot. You need to plant seeds that you are innovative, resourceful, and could benefit him. Then wait for the magic words, "You know, I could really use a guy like you at my company." And if you want to close the deal, you better say, " That sounds great, but I don't know if you could really afford me."
It's all gravy after that.
By the way, I'm an executive recruiter, and my fee is 30%...

How does one advance from a decision support job to an executive management position in either government or corporate? 24 year old needs advice on how to continue climbing the ladder at a quicker pace. Preferrably a 4 to 5 year time span. I don't want to work for 10 to 15 years to get to the executive level. Any strategies?
Top Answer:
It would take a lot of favors and bending over backwards for people higher up. Take a current executive to a brown bag lunch and interview him/her. Specifically ask what things must you demonstrate to show yourself worthy of the next level? Take advantage of the mentor/mentee relationships, for that is something that will get you ahead of a lot of candidates.

I'm curious, why doesn't executive level management take a pay cut? The millions saved could help save jobs in their own companies. How many jobs could be saved if CEO's came forward and said they would take a pay cut to preserve jobs for the workers?

BRAVO!
Do it for the good of the country and your fellow citizens!
It's interesting, where I come from there are businesses and CEO's that run their business in this manner.
When the company does better everyone does better and when times get lean everyone in the company cuts back.
It's a beautiful thing to see.
This is how we have a strong country.......good jobs which lead to strong families which lead to strong neighborhoods which lead to strong communities which lead to strong states which lead to a strong nation.....etc. etc. etc.!!!
When Capitalism knows no national sentiment or loses Nationalism (Made in the U.S.A.) (American pride) you get what we have now......wealthy individuals who don't give a damn about the country or the citizens as long as they get what they feel they have coming!
But here's the thing .......they would have nothing if there weren't people to buy their service or product!
One hand feeds the other!

Technically it is discrimination but what can you do? You can't file personal grievance as no one else will hire you. I find all companies want people who are married with kids in their management jobs as they find them more stable. I find that pretty incredible when you consider that most men who visit prostitutes are married men! And most men that visit domanatrixes are high powered professionals who work in management, especially at executive level! Yet they are all considered more stable than a single person, despite the fact that some of them have terrible marriages & only stay in them to make things look good for themselves professionally, etc.
I've found it's really in the last 3 years that I've been hassled about it so I'm thinking there's a change in the Human Resources industry towards single people, or perhaps it's just that I'm now in my late 30's & maybe that's the age that people get hassled about still being single.
It's no coincidence as it's happened to me at 3 different companies now. One of them I'd been working in for 9 years & during my last year I got so many rude comments about my single status that I had had enough & I quit, only to find the next company did the same thing as they didn't like single managers either (they were very suspicious about what I did in my spare time - even though there was no reason to be). So I quit that job after a year & guess what? Same thing with the third job! Got hassled again. It's like they're trying to make me feel uncomfortable in the hope that I'll quit as they really don't like single people in this place. ALL their staff are married with kids, including people who are only in their early 20's so it's very obvious to me that they have purposely selected married people. I dodged the question in the interview when they asked me about my partner as I thought it was inappropriate & knew they wouldn't hire me if they found out I was single. But because of my age I think they assumed I would be married or in a long term defacto relationship.
The workplace sucks these days. I'm trying to come up with a way of being self employed as I've had enough. There's nothing wrong with me or my single status & if they can't accept me as I am then they can go to hell.
Er, Lamont, is this one of those things where if I click on the link & register then you get $$ from my having clicked on it? I think it is.

First Lamont, find another place to unload your stuff.
Sorry, well been I know the felling I was with a company last year, Great company (good product) but and lets say I'm not ready to turn (well lets say not yet 40) yet. I'm single, the company was bashing me for anything and everything. I ended up filing for UCC. Last Christmas I went home with $5.00 in my pocket, no presents for the family and fought for my UCC benefit. Needless to say the 2nd week in January, I get a hearing and the company never showed up:) I really wish they did, it wasn't right.
I laugh when hr asks the questions about a partner. I just come right out and ask "Why are you asking?" They laugh at me, but it makes the point.
So hang in there,
Good Luck

Can anyone think any jobs that provide the use of a company car aside from: Executive-level management, dealership salesman, messengers/gopher? Need for basis of an article - Thanx!

My boss, who was a newspaper editor, was given a company car by the newspaper owner, who happened to be a multi-millionaire from a very rich, old money, NYC family.
Unfortunately stupid choices in my teen years resulted in felony convictions for bad checks. This is not a representation of my current moral character and I have successfully held employment in both the financial and information technology areas since the conviction. I also have executive level management experience.
None the less, I find that in the current job market, the conviction seems to be more of an issue than previously. Any suggestions on companies that value the employee over the background check? I am willing to relocate nationally, and am willing to accept a lower starting salary to get my foot in the door. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Top Answer:
let me ask you - would you want people having access to your personal financial/secure data info without a background check ? I wouldn't. No one in their right mind would be comfortable with a convicted felon who has offenses in the areas you have working around their most sensitive areas.
Be realistic. Look into another line of work. Stop expecting businesses who depend on dependable people with clean records to bend to your demands. Nothing personal - it is definitely business.

big business?
Many of these companies ship jobs overseas, get tax cuts, sponsor events and compensate executive level management to the point it's obscene.
Working slobs who can barely keep their families heads above water need to fend for themselves, but corporate America getting a handout from us through the federal government is fine. Where are peoples priorities?
Top Answer:
Because people don't get it that it's also what they've been up in arms about, which is redistributing the wealth. Trouble is it's going in the wrong direction, up the ladder to people who already have a lot of money, instead of the people who are really suffering. And we're picking up the tab. Both candidates were involved in it, but at least Obama plans on getting wealth back to the people paying for it.

About me: 31 years old, undergrad in Management & Marketing, Masters of Business Administration
Experience: Casino with >2,000 employees, held positions in Human Resources, Finance (Marketing Analyst), and Operations (both line-level and supervisor).
I'm eager to move into a managerial role, and would love to seek out a large company to move up the ranks. My current employer has some preferential hiring techniques which exclude me from some potential promotions.
I'd be willing to consider a job change to another organization, but have no idea where to start or what factors to consider. Can anyone share their experience or insights? I'd be glad to add additional information as requested.
Thanks!

Start by talking to the career center at the college you graduated from and get active in the alumni association. Assuming you went to school to get a degree that would help you professionally - they should be your first call. Ask them for referrals to companies that typically seek out their graduates with your degree. Then start researching and calling those companies to find out what opportunities exist.
You may also want to consider a private career counselor. When someone lacks direction they can be helpful in helping you get focused.
I'm going for a role that requires 'proven multiple diary managements skills at executive level' and although I do not have any experience of this I've still managed to get an interview (through an agency) - the thing is how do I learn 'diary management'? Is it something that can only be learnt on the job? Is there a way to study in preparation? It's just something I've never had to do in previous employment but is a requirement in the positions I am aiming for. Thanks for your time ;)
Top Answer:
You just need to show you are organised!
They will ask you some awkward questions to see how you would handle certain
situations, and will use your answers to help make their decision to hire you or not!
with multiple diaries, you need to have a system, it could be colours or numbers or
both associated to each diary, so that you don't put the wrong appointment in the
wrong diary. I would expect you would have 'Gatekeeper' duties at executive level
so if you don't know what this is find out before the interview.

if all else fail remeber that 'bullsh1t baffles brains' go gettem tiger!
good luck with the interview!
Do I reschedule. Do I bring it up beforehand and give the interviewer the option to reschedule? Do I show up and do my best to disguise it? In a situation where making a connection is absolutely key, what steps do you take if you have a cold the day before an interview?
If it matters: The position is on the upper side of middle-management, one step below the executive level in the retail sector. This is the sixth and last interview before I expect to receive a job offer.
Top Answer:
Two options- One go and inform them that you are under the weather but that you are one dedicated individual who did not want to miss this opportunity; then politely inform them to keep their distance- as you don't want to share your cold.
Two- call and ask them if they would prefer that you reschedule as you do not want to infect them. This gives them the option, if they say no then you still go and there is no need to inform them again- you've already told them.
Good Luck and get well.
